An Open Letter to Humans of the Year 2100

Dear humans of the year 2100,

By the time you read this I will be long dead, probably forty or fifty years already.  The things about which I write are obvious to you.  To you it is obvious that we, your progenitors, failed.  We failed to make the changes necessary to allow our species to live sustainably on this planet.  We failed to use the technology at our disposal to live cleanly on Earth.  We failed to use farming and waste disposal methods that did not poison the land and water and air.  In our quest for lives of comfort we used our planet, and psychologically our children, as a sewer. The Twelve Steps Of Alcoholics Anonymous: A Translation Into Reality

[Written in 2006.]

1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.

Translation: I admit that I don’t have a true self within that can heal and regain control over my life, and that this is the reason – not all of my unresolved childhood traumas! – that my life has become so disturbed and dysfunctional. I admit that the root of my problem is alcohol, not all the trauma I experienced as a child and cannot acknowledge, and that’s why I come to AA. If only I can cure the symptom then everything will be okay! (So untrue!)

Alcoholics Anonymous: Its Value and Danger

[Written around 2004.]

Alcoholics Anonymous has helped millions to stop drinking, which is a vital step for everyone on the spiritual path, but its inherent limits as a program prevent its members from becoming fully enlightened. AA allows alcoholics a fellowship of peers, but it philosophy denies the full truth – and thus cannot provide fully enlightened guidance. As such, if its members go too far in expressing their true selves, they will not be loved by the group. Continue reading

Jesus Rejected His Mother

[Written around 2005.  Commentary in 2013:  Just to be clear, I have no clue whether or not Jesus actually lived as they said he did.  I take him to be a very unusual and mythological person, and that’s how I’m writing about him…]

Jesus was a warrior, and his prime enemy was the family.  He advocates open rebellion of children against their parents.  Take Matthew 10:34:

“Think not that I have come to bring peace to the earth; it is not peace I bring but a sword.  I have come to set son against father, daughter against mother, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law; a person’s enemies will be the members of his own household.”

Jesus says reject your parents, reject the lies they raised you on, and find the honest truth within yourself.  Continue reading

Jesus’s The Sermon on the Mount: A Radical New Translation and Psychological Explication

[Written around 2005.]

Commentary (from 2005): The Sermon on the Mount is one of the most enlightened pieces of writing I have ever come across.  If it was Jesus who discovered these ideas, then he was incredibly advanced.  If it was someone else, then I take my hat off to him or her.  My goal for this project was to translate the spirit of this Sermon into something fresh, new, and equally enlightening.

The Truth About Spirituality

[Written around 2004.  Of note, as of 2013:  “Spirituality” is another word I basically presently avoid using, because it’s so radically misused.  But…since this is an historical essay, I’ll leave it as is.  But, words like “spirituality” aside, the important thing is that I still stand by the ideas in the essay…]

A spiritual person is connected with his spirit. To do this fully he must have access to his deepest psyche, and thus have resolved his most ancient psychic traumas. To get there he will have passed through hell, and thus will know how to help others get out of there too. If he has not resolved his traumas, however, they will block his conscious connection with his spirit, and will stunt his burgeoning spirituality. Continue reading
